With such an inspiring collection of women featured in the first volume, I am already excited to read the next volume! A must read for anyone with a passion for cyber who is considering a career in the field.
This book makes it's point clear at the outset when it highlights that currently only 10% of those who enter the cybersecurity profession are women. This is an obviously problematic position, and the book also points out that typically, women are paid less than men in the industry. Already it appears that women seeking to enter or who are already in the profession have the odds stacked against them.
Many of the women who tell their stories in this book are trailblazers. When they were making their path, they could not see women who were like them in the positions they wanted to be in. This can make women feel like they are inferior, as if they are not good enough or they do not belong. It is important to acknowledge that as a challenge, but also to explore how these unique and inspiring woman forged their own path when they overcame all of the challenges that lay ahead of them.
For some people, childhood hobbies grow into careers. This is not an understatement. For some people, beginning a career in cyber feels like the continuation of a fascination they have had since childhood. It appears as though they have been given the chance to turn something they considered a hobby into a profession and career. The thing is many of the woman faced obstacles, or reasons why they though they couldn’t, but when the time and the opportunity was right, they too became cyber women.
It would be remiss to assume that this was the only path in to a cyber career though. Without a defined pathway and few women already in these positions it can sometimes seem like a pointless pursuit, and that may be the reason some women come to it marginally later on in life. These brilliant women each used their own unique set of skills and experiences to bring something unique.
Not everyone who works in Cyber has a technical background, in fact many people do not. The profession is stronger through diversity and differing perspectives.
Every journey has to have a beginning, and the similarity throughout these stories, is a decisive moment. Not the senior or last steps, but the first step. The one you have to take to get started. Many of the stories have an element as to whether this career choice would work out for them, but they knew they just had to start. They listened to a passion. Sometimes people think that if they have not had a certain start in an industry that they cannot find a way in. But that is part of what makes cyber women so great.
